ClearWay Mobility

An electronic obstacle-detection cane for visually impaired individuals — no app, no screen, no Bluetooth.

Overview

Traditional white canes detect obstacles at ground level but miss above-ground hazards — low-hanging signs, open car doors, scaffolding — that are especially prevalent in dense urban environments like Mumbai and Dubai. ClearWay addresses this gap with a cane that alerts users through handle vibration the moment an obstacle enters range.

The device integrates an ultrasonic distance sensor, a microcontroller, and a haptic vibration motor into a standard cane form factor. There is no companion app, no screen, and no Bluetooth pairing required: the feedback is immediate and entirely self-contained. Priced at INR 6,999 (~$75), it is positioned as an affordable alternative to existing electronic mobility aids.

Pilots are planned with schools for the blind and NGOs in India and the UAE. The first session was held at Kamla Mehta School for the Blind in Mumbai, where every participant said they would use ClearWay again.
